5 reasons to love and hate TagAZ Tager

Origins
In 2006, the Korean company SsangYong ceased production of the three-door SUV frame Korando. A year earlier, the conveyor life of his five-door older brother, Musso, ended. In this situation, at the Taganrog Automobile Plant, which was actively looking for partners (primarily in Korea), it was decided to buy out the equipment and set up licensed production of these models under its own brand. So SsangYong Musso turned into a TagAZ Road Partner, and Korando took the name Tager.

Together with the Russian residence permit, the car also received a number of technical differences, but not all of them went to the benefit of the car … The launch of the new production took more than two years, and the first Tager left the assembly line in 2008. And in 2009, the five-door version was launched, which the original model did not have. The car was equipped with three engine options: a 2.3-liter gasoline “four” with a power of 150 hp, a six-cylinder in-line petrol engine with a power of 220 hp. and a 2.6-liter diesel engine producing 106 hp and a 2.9-liter diesel engine producing 120 hp. (they were all produced in Korea under the license of Mercedes).

Paired with four-and five-cylinder engines worked 5-speed manual transmission, and with a 3.2-liter engine – four-speed automatic M74LE, developed in 1988 by BTR (Australian daughter BorgWarner). Despite the absence of a similar Russian-made SUV at the time and an affordable price, Tager sales were lower than planned: they did not exceed 2,500 units per year. As a result, in 2012, production was minimized.

However, the car was very tenacious, and today it can often be found on the roads. Quite a lot of these machines are offered in the secondary market. Their prices fall in the range from 250-260 thousand (for cars with a 2.3-liter engine with a stated mileage of about 250,000 km) to 550-600 thousand (for cars produced in 2011-2012 with in-line 220-horsepower “sixes” , Automatic transmission and declared mileage of less than 100 000 km).
Well, now it’s time to see what they praise for, and for what Tager are scolded by his current and former owners.

We have to admit that with some serious shortcomings of the car, its owners could face even during the inspection in the showroom. First, the doors … In very many instances, they close frankly badly. You will try to pull the door on yourself from the inside, as in those models to which we have become accustomed – they won’t shut. Move with a swing, from the heart – will play back and again will not close! In general, it is necessary to skillfully close the door of Tager – with solid effort, but with a small amplitude, 20-30 centimeters. And attempts to adjust the locks, as a rule, have zero efficiency. Further more. It turns out that half-open glasses tend to nasty rattle on the go.

There are certain complaints about visibility. It seems to be a typical dzhiperskaya, “commander” landing should fully comply with the principle of “I sit high – look away.” But the upper part of the windshield is covered with a rain sensor, a mirror and a tinted antenna, so that both the high-hanging traffic lights and the signs to which you drove too close are almost invisible. Visibility is hampered by the rear sofa head restraints (most owners were quick to get rid of them), and at the speed the rear window becomes very dirty. Moreover, if you drive faster than 80 km / h, then the washing fluid from the nozzle blows off the turbulence that occurs, and the wipers work “dry”. Tager in general turned out to be pretty dirty: in bad weather, both the windshield, and the mirrors, and the headlights get dirty almost instantly. A headlight washer is not provided …

Not enthusiastic luggage capacity. It is higher in height than in depth, so it is already difficult to transport, say, something like a small chest of drawers, but some dimensional thing is already difficult. In the recall of one avid fisherman, it is explicitly stated that Tager arranged everything for everyone, but after buying an inflatable motorboat I had to sell it and buy a pick-up truck. You can, of course, fold the back sofa (while in the cabin you get a sleeper of quite decent sizes) – but then the car becomes a two-seater. Finally, in so many reviews there are references to claims to the back door. It itself is quite heavy, plus a spare tire was hung on the door. It would seem, what problems – the door opens sideways. But the thing is that if you put the car with a bias to the left, as the existing latch stops cope with its duties, the door attempts to slam the owner engaged in loading and unloading.
