Rock and Roll Concentrate: Bertone X1 / 9 Ownership

Such cars in Russia on the go – no more than three or four pieces. This copy was literally saved by a miracle in Rostov from the garbage dump and restored … no, not 100% original, but this process cannot be called “kolhozing”. The approach to the restoration was chosen very conceptual, including a trip to the factory in Turin. However, first things first …

Car:
Bertone X1 / 9 (nee – Fiat X1 / 9, later named Bertone, after the completion of production at the Fiat plant), rear-wheel drive two-seater sports coupe in the back of a targa, produced in 1985.

Outside
The Fiat X1 / 9 is an impractical but very fun toy car, a tiny two-seater sports coupe for those who could not afford Lamborghini and the Maserati. The car carries all the signs of the European “cool design” of the 70s-80s – the ordinary mass-produced cars of those years looked much more boring. The rapid forms created by the Bertone atelier, the headlights retractable from the hood, the hard removable roof – the X1 / 9 looked very cool, while having a low-power mass low-powered engine. Thanks to this combination, it sold very decent circuits by the standards of the class – in total, about 160,000 of these machines were launched under the Fiat and Bertone brands.

The frameless “triangles” that hold the rear-view mirrors are fixedly mounted on the frameless doors.

The hood, as in many old cars of those times, does not open “shark-like”, but on the contrary, in the direction of travel. But the maintenance and repair of this fact does not make it difficult, since the main purpose of the “hood” is to be a trunk for storing a removable hard fiberglass roof and some small amount of luggage under it. Behind the trunk – as many as two. The first one, which is closer to the bumper, is, in fact, a trunk with a volume of one medium-sized sports bag, and the second is actually a hood that hides the engine. The name Fiat on the car does not appear anywhere – the company said goodbye to this model in 1982, transferring its production to the Bertone factory in Turin.

Inside
The cabin of the car is strictly double, without any hint of a place even for a small load. There is a fuel tank (behind the driver) and a spare tire (behind the passenger) behind the seat backs. Seats pereshito, but with preservation of the form.

Of the comfort elements in the vehicle configuration, in fact, there is only the rear window heating. There is no air conditioner (although there were versions for it with the USA), power windows are non-native, installed additionally; armrest – also a foreign item. Airbags are not available due to age.

Purchase history
“I first met the Fiat X1 / 9 a long time ago – in 2001 at Autoexotics,” says Maxim:

– The car was in pristine condition – the sea captain brought her from Italy a new one, and she spent her whole life in the same hands. The owner showed the car at the exhibition and was happy to talk about it, and I listened, sat behind the wheel and literally fell in love with this tiny supercar!

The owner showed the car at the exhibition and was happy to talk about it, and I listened, sat behind the wheel and literally fell in love with this tiny supercar! As a big fan of cars, Maxim constantly visited various exhibitions, festivals, runs and other themed events, and a few years ago he thought about what he wanted not only to be a spectator, but also to participate in these parties directly! But for this, an “entrance ticket” was needed – an interesting, extraordinary car … Since our hero’s childhood passed in the 90s, various Italian sports cars were very close to him. Be sure to – “blind” headlights, which in the same 90s were “cooler steep”! And third, the convertible would … And if with a central-engine layout … Maxim began compiling a list of possible candidates for the role of a future favorite toy, and suddenly remembered the very Fiat X1 / 9 – he just fit in perfectly with the criteria of a dream in all respects! – When I decided on my future “dream car”, I began to search hard for him on various online trading sites. Although such cars were not uncommon abroad, no one in our country sold the X1 / 9.
