Lamps trailer lights were simply connected in parallel with the lantern lamps on the stern of the car – one to one. The process also facilitated and accelerated the unification of paired lamps (brake lights and dimensions) into groups for one wire, which was in the order of things on older cars. A couple of hours of fussing – and it’s done! And the cunning ones, who did not want their acquaintances to beg for a “cart” for a trip to the country or to the south, also changed a couple of pins in the connector block in places – their own combination in the order of contacts allowed to make the trailer compatible only with with my own car … The canonical classic direct connection of the tow bar to the car’s electrical equipment: Why it is all the more difficult now, however, today grandfather’s way of connecting a “lamp into a lamp” has lost relevance. This happened for two reasons. First, the electronics of a modern (even budget) car, as a rule, constantly monitors the integrity of the lamps in the lanterns on the stern of the car, since these days their serviceability is considered to be a very serious driving safety factor. The electronics compares the nominal current load known to it from a standard lamp with reality, and “sees” a blown lamp that is missing or with a sharply increased current consumption — namely, the latter case corresponds to the connection of the trailer when the power of all the lamps doubles. This leads at the very least to the ignition of the “check”, and in the worst case, to glitches in the work of the “stop” and “turn signals.” Secondly (this aspect is less important, but still important), a banal increase in the power of electrical consumers is twice as bad affect the wiring of the car, which is now performed extremely economically: in the wires to the consumers there is not a single extra copper hair – everything is strictly calculated with a minimum margin! And doubling the load is quite capable of leading to dangerous heating. For these reasons, today it is practiced to connect the electrical equipment of the trailer to the car by means of electronic switching units, commonly known by the people as “smart connection”. Smart Connect modules serve as intermediaries between the trailer electrician and the car electrician, and use the latter only as a source of commands, and not as a power unit. What is a “smart connection” and which one to choose? Smart connect blocks are expensive or original -universal. The first are relevant for cars of medium and high price segments, with fairly advanced electronics. They receive commands via CAN-bus and in their work take into account a lot of different processes occurring in the car. Their installation is undesirable in the garage conditions, and even in the conditions of a small multi-brand service, where they are used to simply changing the oil, pads and starters.
