Everything is more complicated than it seems: is it worth buying a Suzuki Jimny
Suzuki Jimny – the model itself is old (it has its history since 1970), and the third generation in particular also became incredible by modern standards, a long-lived, released from 1998 to 2018. During this time, the car has not undergone many changes, and it is the long production period that largely explains such a large variation in prices in the secondary market. Well, another important reason – of course, the presence of right-hand drive cars, which are traditionally a little cheaper than left-hand drive. But unlike the Pajero Mini, Jimny was not “endemic”, so the right-hand drive cars are less popular and make up only about 20% of the supply on the secondary market.
Usually, having decided on the age of the cars and the choice of the bodies, we go directly to the nuances of choice and the technical features of the model. But in the case of Jimny, even before starting to deal with technology, it is worthwhile to identify several common important qualities that influence the choice of this model. The point here is that, because of the innocuous appearance and toy dimensions, many of those who are not familiar with this machine personally perceive it a little wrongly and are assigned to the role of the first or only car for a mother, wife or daughter. Well, what – a small, all-wheel drive, and the clearance is large: it means, it will be easy to park, and in the yard will not get stuck in winter, and you can not be afraid of curbs. But in fact, the Jimny is more of a car for a more enthusiastic than a novice driver.
It will be much more difficult for a newcomer to “roll in” into a small Suzuki than in a regular car, and for good reason. First of all, the four-wheel drive here is not permanent, but rigidly connected, so that in everyday “civil” driving mode the car will be rear-wheel drive – well, explaining what rear-wheel drive is fraught with with such a short wheelbase, perhaps, unnecessarily. Connecting the chuck is possible only on slippery surfaces, but this does not solve the problem, and partly even on the contrary, aggravates it, because in the absence of a center differential and sufficient driving experience, the rear axle has every chance of overtaking the front axle. The next item is a frame structure and a high center of gravity: on the same arc, an inexperienced driver with an unfortunate set of circumstances has an increased chance not only to turn around, but also to roll over. Small dimensions of the car, of course, are convenient when parking in urban areas, but it is worth remembering that, by default, the spare wheel hangs on the tailgate, prominently protruding from it. About the internal tightness can be mentioned briefly – and so it is clear that the interior is very narrow. We also briefly designate the features of the cabin layout: the second row is actually located in the luggage compartment, so when the four of us drive, the car does not have a trunk, and after going to the supermarket, it becomes a double. Add to this an energy-intensive, but by no means the most comfortable suspension with two continuous bridges, shaking riders and booming on uneven surfaces, as well as fuel consumption of 10-15 liters per hundred, which you would not expect with such dimensions – and you will not get the image cool little cars for women every day. ”
Undoubtedly, there is a certain proportion of those who drive this car every day and will want to challenge this conclusion, saying that we are exaggerating. However, all that is listed above are only dry technical facts, and although it is quite possible for anyone to go to Jimny and in any way, this does not negate the fact that this is a frame SUV on bridges, it’s just very small, and therefore more suited to someone who understands What is this design, and how to handle it. So including Jimny in the shortlist of applicants for the acquisition, be sure to meet him personally – perhaps this will help avoid spontaneous, but not the most reasonable purchase.
Well, now, if you do not rethink the need to buy Jimny already at this stage, you can go directly to the choice – namely, to the body and what it is installed on. We already know that at the heart of the design there is a ladder frame, like other serious SUVs. Usually for frame machines, we specify that in addition to obvious problems in the form of deep corrosion, cracks and deformation, one must also look for indirect signs of off-road operation in the form of clay and dirt in the cavities of the frame and underbody. For Jimny, of course, this is true to the full – but not only dirt and extensive surface corrosion from below can be found on rare well-treated anticorrosive machines, which are operated only in “urban scenarios” by those very “atypical” owners. Usually, Jimny is shod with at least decent All-Terrain tires, if not into something more serious, and it doesn’t do without dirt – so don’t get scared and give up “dirty” copies with good care. Well, as usual, we recall that the frame number should be perfectly readable – problems with it mean guaranteed problems with registration actions.
