Despite the strangeness of the very concept of a front-wheel-drive hatchback, dressed in plastic “off-road” armor, this segment proved to be viable. You already had the opportunity to choose between the Lada Vesta SW Cross and the Kia Rio X-Line, and today we face the dispute between the Lada XRAY Cross and the Renault Sandero Stepway. Renault Sandero with the Stepway prefix attracts over 80% of those who choose the Sandero model as such. The concept of a “raised” urban hatchback still looks attractive in appearance and well implemented in practice, although in 2019 some small ergonomic “jokes” of the French car are surprising. But, unlike the Tolyatti rival, it is Stepway that offers the opportunity to “here and now” ride with two pedals, as well as choose between several engine options of the same displacement (1.6 l). And Renault will surely be chosen by those who for some reason categorically do not want to drive a car with a rook on the grille. In addition, this is the rare case when a “foreign car” turned out to be even slightly more affordable than a domestic car! Although the new VAZ “almost crossover” shares the platform with the Renault hatchback, in many details the more recent XRAY Cross beats Stepway. After all, it is a bit more powerful and dynamic, slightly better equipped and potentially more ready for the assault on light off-road thanks to greater clearance and special modes of electronics, the head of the transmission. Let’s not forget about the more roomy trunk and increased space on the second row. However, many can be frightened off by the lack of an alternative power unit with a “stirrer” and three pedals in the cabin – although this causes nostalgia for the “father’s devyatochka”, but far from all is acceptable. Moreover, the manufacturer no longer makes a discount for the “domesticity” of this car.
1. In your city more than a million inhabitants?
Renault Sandero Stepway is equipped not only with the usual five-step mechanics, but also with two types of automatic transmissions. In the “ordinary” versions it is not the most modern four-stage machine, but the City version will substitute the selector of the continuously variable transmission under the right hand – the Jatco variator, paired with a 1.6-liter 113-horsepower H4M engine common to some Renault-Nissan alliance models . Therefore, in traffic jams of a large city, the owner of such Stepway will not be forced to continually recall a driving school, “passing an examination for a smooth start from a place.” Only a pen: under the hood of the XRAY Cross version, so far only one uncontested powertrain, consisting of a 1.8-liter sixteen-valve VAZ-21179 with a capacity of 122 hp. and the traditional five-speed manual gearbox. Rumor has it that soon the same 1.6-liter Renault-Nissan engine and Jatco variator will appear on the XRAY, but so far the “manual” Ixray is not the best option for moving around the Russian megalopolises with their inevitable traffic jams and mile-long stretches. And in smaller cities, the machine has its own circle of fans – for example, women from the beautiful half of humanity.
2. Is it justified to overpay for a thing just because you liked it?
Surprisingly, but the fact: the car bearing the name of Louis Reno, in Russia was more accessible than Lada! Perhaps this is due to the moral novelty of XRAY Cross, but without taking into account possible and reaching 80,000 rubles discounts for trade-in and credit, the basic Stepway is more affordable than Ixrei for 27,000 rubles (from 727,990 rubles). And even in the case of the maximum configuration, the difference is reduced to a symbolic 2,000 rubles (911,900 rubles), but it is still in favor of Renault! On last year’s cars of this model, you can save up to 18 to 80 thousand rubles. And let’s not forget that for 829,990 rubles, Stepway can be purchased with a CVT. In spite of the fact that Sandero and XRAY use the single “full-time” B0 platform, the pricing of these models is somewhat different, and not in favor of the domestic car! So, the “entrance ticket” without any discounts for a more “fresh” moral Lada starts at 754,900 rubles – that is, it is noticeably more expensive than the 2019 issue of Stepway (727,990 rubles). Yes, and for the “top” version of Presige asking 913,900 rubles, while Renault “at max speeds” costs 2,000 rubles less.
3. Familiar with such a problem, as punched pallet?
In terms of space from the road to the lowest point, the Stepway with its 195 mm is almost a crossover, especially against the background of the usual Renault Sandero hatchback, which has a clearance of 155 to 172 mm, depending on the load. However, the CVT on the Stepway City version protrudes down much more than other transmissions, reducing ground clearance to 178 mm. In Lada, the declared clearance is noticeably larger – 215 mm. Lada cars have always been distinguished by impressive ground clearance against the backdrop of cars, “foreign cars.”
