Rotor carrot: tuning Lada Samara Fun
Anyone who has long been interested in tuning and racing can remember this car: the VAZ-2108 nicknamed “Carrot” participated in the very first official drag racing competitions in Russia back in 2004. But those who see the car for the first time are unlikely to remain indifferent: after all, this is not just a dealer “eight” in the back of a landau, but also a rotor!
This is not the first rotor Lada Maxim. Once he had a “eight” with a “Wankel”, and he really liked this car. The VAZ rotary engine is heavier than the traditional piston engine, but it is very compact and located below the hood under the hood. Due to the concomitant lowering of the center of gravity, the car at high speeds is more enjoyable, especially with proper suspension settings. After the sale of the first “eight”, it turned out that Maxim got a job at the same service as one of the owners of the “widely known in narrow circles” car nicknamed “Carrot” – Lada Samara Fun with a motor replaced with a rotary one. When the interest of the past owner to the project began to fade, and the car stopped receiving enough attention and care, Maxim bought it, which literally saved him from oblivion. Lada got him already incomplete – without the front panel, engine and gearbox. There was no awning, there was no rear bracket for its attachment. In fact, it was a body on wheels – but the body is rare and worth the restoration.
This 1991 VAZ-2108 was produced for export. Many foreign dealers of Lada tried to develop the success of successful models, independently modifying them, after which the modifications received new names. Before you is a Lada Samara Fun with a landau-type bodywork, created by the German importer Deutsche Lada with the support of specialists from Bohse. The rear part of the roof, along with the pillars, was cut, the body was strengthened, and a tarpaulin roof was installed at the rear. Instead of the trunk, a plastic box was mounted (the so-called “trough”), which served both as a trunk and as a niche for a folding top. In combination with a large transparent hatch in the front, this gave almost “cabriolet” sensations – and in addition such a car also cost less than analogue-cabriolets, so it enjoyed some popularity.
In the late 90s, this car was re-exported, and in 2001 it was completely dismantled – it was then that she received a new charge of life at the cost of losing authenticity. Wings, hood, grille, front panel, bumpers and headlights were replaced with the corresponding parts from the VAZ-2114. At the same time under the hood was installed rotary-piston engine VAZ-415. The interior of the car has also undergone changes: the seats and all the plastic panels of the passenger compartment are altered into the skin.
To restore the car to the look of 2001 already in our days, a donor was purchased – another Lada Samara Fun in disrepair – after an accident, with an incomplete engine and an even larger list of problems. They borrowed from it a “trough”, a rear bar for fixing the tent, the tent itself and a gearbox, and the rest of the spare parts went “to the warehouse”. The color of the car, of course, is also no longer factory. The last time it was repainted in 2005, but the appearance of “Carrot” already asks him to update.
The appearance of the non-standard G8 was supplemented with a few touches: thus, instead of standard wheels, rare and light magnesium disks of the SMZ plant were found, and regular mirrors gave way to elements from Hagus – such were put by German dealers of Lada.
Now, 18 years later, the VAZ-415 engine is once again in the car, but is a bit modernized. After many years of ownership of the rotor “eight” Maxim became a connoisseur of this rare engineering solution, and since the project “Carrot” became famous thanks to the swap on the rotor, he decided to return the “vankel” to the empty place under the hood.
Standard VAZ-415 on the stock issue gives 135 hp The eccentric shaft from Mazda RX-8 and the rotor from it are also installed here in order to increase the compression ratio, reduce the weight of the rotor and increase the power. The exhaust system is welded from a pipe with a diameter of 60 mm. Estimated power – about 150 hp
The suspension also did not go unnoticed: the Plaza Sport racks were installed in a circle, and supports with articulated joints were used in the front. Maxim, however, is not satisfied with this set – he says that his previous “eight” on the TorgMash stands was better and more interesting, but here the resulting configuration is too rigid. The front brakes are from the VAZ-2112, the rear brakes are produced by TorgMash. Manual five-speed gearbox taken from the donor Lada Samara Fun.
Maxim admits: it is inconvenient for him to travel around this city in this car – it is too tiring to drive around Moscow without an automatic transmission. Therefore, the “carrot” is operated as a weekend car – this is the best format for both the car and the owner. Due to the high degree of compression, Maxim pours AI-95 into the “eight”. If you turn the engine, then the 98th will be useful, but usually the car goes in a sparing mode. The average fuel consumption in the city is about 15 l / 100 km.
