Despite the fact that the first generation was produced in our country under the Doninvest brand, the Lanos became a bestseller after a change of generations and the appearance of an American type plate on the body in 2002. The history of the car under the brand Chevrolet ended in 2009, but even in the recent 2017, its next reincarnation under the name ZAZ Chance was on the conveyor. When we chose the hero for the next article, we decided to stop on the Chevrolet. Still, in 2019, the car under the famous brand is much more liquid than the incomprehensible FSO or ZAZ.

Such cars are usually referred to as “better than walking” or “not on credit”. And if in the case of new cars this is justified, then after ten years everything may not be so obvious. Why – tell below.

We have no disregard for low-cost cars. Moreover, Lanos is really good in many ways: he has a reliable engine, and the box is normal, and … Well, that’s enough. Those photos that you see below were taken in the city with all its charms in the form of reagents on the road, traffic jams and other unfavorable conditions for exploitation. In fact, in nature (albeit in the Red Book) there are decent Lanos, the purchase of which makes sense. We just had no luck. Maybe you should have taken more money, you ask?

Probably, it will be the shortest material from those that we have already released on this topic. Of course, “according to the passport” the Lanos of all stripes had six engines ranging from 1.3 to 1.6 liters and two types of gearboxes. But in Russia under the brand Chevrolet delivered only one modification. Therefore, we have no choice at all, and almost all possible problems could be seen on the very first instance.

So, there is no choice of motors. He is alone here – A15SMS. One and a half liters, 86 hp … and really a very good resource. With normal care, it will easily pass through 300 thousand and even more. And since there is nothing to choose here, it remains only to choose the best of what is. Namely – the most well-groomed version, not drenched from the bottom to the top with oil, without pieces of “Zhiguli” wiring with VAZ sensors and electrical tape. Difficult, but we will try.

First, this motor in itself loves to bleed butter. Such a strange unit: in itself, no, and out the oil drives with enviable constancy. It is surprising that a very simple motor finds so many possibilities for this. The main problem most likely lies in the crankcase ventilation system. And then the oil is looking for a way out. And if the oily pan is not always visible, then the current gasket under the valve cover catches the eye immediately.

By the way, a funny fact about this gasket. Among the owners of the Nexia with the same engine goes the myth that to avoid the constant leakage of the valve cover will help install the cover from the Lanos. In Lanos, of course, the legend is turned 180 degrees: they need a cover from Nexia.

The second reason for the complexity of the search is universal for almost all “third and more” owners of inexpensive cars. Some owners Lanos believe that if the machine itself is not expensive, then the spare parts can be put the most penny. The best ones are, of course, from the “nine”. And you need a lot of spare parts. Starter, pump, thermostat, engine sensors – all this does not shine with reliability. When choosing a car, it is advisable to find out what the owner changed, and what parts he put. At the same time you can ask the oil. Often they pour the cheapest and rather rarely. The motor, of course, is hardy, but the camel’s back was not broken by the anvil, as we remember.

Sometimes you can find Lanos with a 16-valve A16DMS engine or with very similar eight-valve A15SM and G15MF. They are extremely rare (they were not officially sold at all with the A16DMS), but the main difficulties are the same as for the A15SMS.

Transmission is also not necessary to choose. There is a mechanical “five-speed” D15, originating from the Opel F16. With a low-power motor, it serves for a long time, so if the clutch is still alive, there should be no questions. But you need to check the clarity of the gears: the link is weak, and if the programs are “stuck” with difficulty, you can try to bargain a thousand or two to replace the scenes.

And now we come to the main problem of Lanos: this is his body. It rots very quickly, especially in megacities. There is no great reason to check the iron with a thickness gauge, but it is necessary to examine the integrity of the body for at least the strength elements. Everything is rotting – from thresholds to the roof. However, we now see it with my own eyes.
