JAC T6 pickup in Russia: twice cheaper than Toyota Hilux!

Our editorial has a JAC T6 pickup commercial created specifically for Russia. The Chinese quail our famous military song “Katyusha”, simultaneously demonstrating the features of their “truck”. At the same time, Kolesa.ru editors found out all the prices and equipment a week before they were officially announced.

On the withdrawal of a pickup JAC T6 on the Russian market, we wrote in January of this year. Then, in the Approval of the type of vehicle that was at the disposal of our editorial office, but not yet published on the Rosstandart website, an error was discovered: when issuing a certificate, the data on the transfer case and downshift was “lost” – there was even a suspicion that a compact pickup would arrive in Russia in a “weakened” form, although even in China, in the domestic “front-wheel-drive” market, the car is optionally equipped with all-wheel drive and a ponizhayka. In April, the Rosstandard corrected the error: the OTTS with the validity period from April 19, 2019 to December 20, 2021, which is now posted on the organization’s website, states that the JAC T6 pick-up truck is equipped with a two-stage BorgWarner Razdatka – the first has a gear ratio of 1.0, the second is 2.48.

Recall that the car will be brought to us from Kazakhstan, where JAC has its own production, more precisely, almost its own. JAC, together with the Chinese company CMC (China Motor Corporation), created a joint venture in shares of 45:51 (in favor of SMS) and bought out 51% of the shares from the Kazakh company Saryarka AvtoProm. That is, in fact, this pipeline is in full possession of JAC. From it, the S3 and S5 crossovers are already coming to Russia, and the JAC iEV75 “train” is also entering the local market. A few months ago, the T6 pickup was opened here, both for the needs of the local market and for Russia. Recall that last year in China was presented where as a more modern pickup T8, however, as we are informed in the Russian representation of JAC, there are no plans for it yet and, most interesting, is not expected.

The compact pickup T6, which at one time “painted” from the previous generation Toyota Hilux, will be two turbo engines. The base unit is a 2.0-liter petrol, willingly consuming AI-92. This motor is well known to Russian buyers JAC S5, it produces 177 hp, but, not least, it has a “diesel shelf” of torque, the maximum of which is 290 Nm available in the range from 1800 to 4000 rpm. There is also a 2.0-liter unit on heavy fuel. There is more traction here – 320 Nm, available in the range from 1600 to 2600 rpm, but the hurry is not like a “benzinki”, only 136 “horses”. Both engines are packaged with 6-speed manual gearboxes and all-wheel drive transmissions with downstage. The front axle is connected rigidly, that is, the part-time scheme is familiar to pick-up drivers.

In the market of compact pickups in Russia JAC T6 will occupy a special position. This will be the only “truck” of a foreign brand, which is produced on the territory of the Eurasian Economic Union, which, along with Russia and Kazakhstan, includes Belarus, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan. Thus, JAC will import these cars to the Russian Federation duty-free, which will dramatically increase the potential of the Chinese pricing firm.

JAC T6 pickup will enter the Russian market only on September 1, prices will officially be announced in a week, but our editorial staff already has a detailed layout. So, both power units will be presented in two configurations – basic Intermediate and improved Full Extra, while the set of options also depends on the type of engine: the cheapest will be the petrol Intermediate, for which you will have to pay only 1.3 million, the petrol Full Extra will cost a hundred thousand more. But for the engine with heavy fuel they are asking for 1.5 million rubles. Thus, “on the basis of” JAC T6 was almost 2 times cheaper than its main competitor Toyota Hilux. The basic package already includes alloy wheels, power exterior mirrors, air conditioning, power windows, a steering wheel trimmed with leather, two front airbags, a radio, a USB port, and even a CD player. The driver of this version will need to have much more dexterity, because there is no ESP, a lifting assistance system, a dynamic stabilization system. All this and much more is available in expensive versions, which also offer keyless access, a rear-view camera, Bluetooth and other options.

Who will JAC T6 compete with? At a price – obviously, only with UAZ Pickup, which is cheaper by half a million, but in the upper configuration “Maximum” costs just 1.2 million rubles. In class – also with the same Toyota Hilux and Mitsubishi L200. What can the Chinese count on?
