How to start the car if the battery is in the key fob alarm?

What if, far from civilization, the battery in the key fob “died” in your alarm? There are no shops nearby, there is no spare battery either, and you cannot use the emergency unlocking of the alarm through the “valet” button …

“What is valet?”
One of the many laws of Murphy sounds, it seems, something like this: “if some problem is likely to be even one percent, it will definitely arise sooner or later.” In other words, writing this article led me to the third such story that happened to my acquaintances, although even the only such case seemed extremely unlikely to me before …

One of my friends went fishing, not too far from civilization, but not too close. Returning from the river to his car, he could not start the engine – a battery sat in the key fob of the alarm system. He opened the door with a key, waited for the siren to scream, and began to ring up the friends …

I didn’t ask for the presence of a spare battery in the glove compartment or a bag with documents that every responsible car owner simply must have — it was clear that there wasn’t … But the “valet” button on what ?! Discouraged, I learned that my comrade has no idea about the “jack” – neither what it is, nor how to use it …

Alas, the problem is common. The secret “valet” button is available on absolutely all models and brands of car alarms, and it is intended for just such cases – so that in case of a battery of a key fob, its damage or loss, it was possible to start the engine and leave. But to use it, you need:

1 – know what it is in principle;

2 – know where it is located in your car;

3 – know how to enter “valet” mode;

4 – know the code of the “valet” button.

It often happens that the nuances of the signaling operation in addition to the banal “open / close” are unknown to the owner – negligent installers were too lazy to explain where the button was installed, they forgot to give instructions for the alarm, changed the code from the regular “111” or “123” to a new one, but forgot report it and so on. In case the car was purchased second-hand, and the alarm system was inherited with the car, problems with the “jack” were even more likely …

As a result, one thing remains: to try to revive the key chain with a dead battery. We assume that there are no other cars around you whose owners can be asked to lend a battery from your key fob for five minutes … So, let’s try to apply current from an external source to the battery. And the very first thing we will do is open the keychain to find out the type of battery installed in it. Or rather, its tension, for it is very different.

These different batteries …
Suppose, to begin with, that we were rarely lucky, and, opening the key chain, we found an A27 type nano-finger inside. Such batteries used to be quite common, but today are used infrequently and are usually found in old alarms. A27 – 12-volt battery, and the battery at the car – also 12-volt! So, you can without any tricks apply to the battery contacts in the key fob power directly from the starter battery terminals under the hood. To do this, we will need two wiring, stripped at the ends – if you don’t have them in the tool box, you will have to dismiss the USB cable with the knife, where they definitely are. It is desirable to observe the polarity of the connection (plus to plus, minus to minus), but the error, in general, is not terrible, because key rings are usually protected from the inside-out installation of the battery.

Consider another option. We were unlucky, and a 3-volt “tablet” of type CR2450, CR2032 or similar, with the inscription “3V”, turned out to be in the keyfob. So, we need a source with a voltage of 3 volts and the same two wiring, stripped at the ends. As a power source, a battery of any phone with a voltage of 3.7 volts will do. This is somewhat more than we need, but in general, not scary. It would be even better if the battery of the phone is less than 50% or less. Carefully slip the tips of the wires under the key fob battery, and push the opposite ends to the flat contacts of the phone’s battery. And we show the miracles of gutta-percha by pressing some key with a semi-free finger on the key fob button.

Not to say that often, but this weird version comes across: two thin 3-volt CR2016 batteries, connected in series. They are inserted into the trinket pins “one pile”, one above the other. And this “stack” forms a power source with a voltage of 6 volts in tandem. In this case, we will help the usual USB-adapter in the cigarette lighter, which gives 5-5.5 volts. It is almost six and quite enough. To connect to the battery, you need to cut off the microUSB- “male” connector from the USB-cable, strip the wiring and slip the ends under the “stack” of batteries: red plus plus, black – minus. Well, USB-cable, respectively, inserted into the adapter in the cigarette lighter.

1.5 volts – worst of all …
Well, at the end of the most problematic option – and, unfortunately, the most common today in the charms with display and feedback.
