Not so long ago, we found out which off-road vehicles from those sold in Russia have the highest ground clearance – and, oddly enough, solutions were found in different price categories. However, not everyone is ready to overpay and buy a crossover or SUV – for someone a sedan is enough. But one that is able to argue the largest clearance with a different crossover. What options are there for those looking for an off-road geometry sedan?
Of course, “off-road geometry” is a certain degree of exaggeration: overhangs, which are great for sedans, and other parameters play a role here. However, the share of objectivity is also present here. For example, one of the most popular crossovers on the market, the Kia Sportage, has a declared ground clearance of 182 mm. And two sedans from our list today can boast a much higher ground clearance! Yes, and some others are inferior to him quite a bit. Let’s agree that the minimum serious indicator can be considered at least 17 centimeters, and take a look at which sedans are suitable for these requirements, placing them in order of increasing ground clearance.
As it turns out, the Citroen C4 is not only the most affordable diesel sedan on our market, but also a car with outstanding ground clearance: for it, thanks to the suspension with the “package for Russia”, the figure is 176 mm. Diesel versions, by the way, have an even more energy-intensive running gear to compensate for the slightly increased mass. In general, the model is far from new: the sedan, built on the PF2 platform, experienced a restyling in 2015, and saw the light in an already distant 2010. Suspension schemes for this time have not changed: this is still the same MacPherson front and torsion beam rear. But the list of engines a little corrected.
As a result, the motor range has come to the mind that it has now: it has two petrol and one diesel unit. Gasoline engines – this is an atmospheric VTi 115 hp. and turbocharged THP, the “heir” of the Prince family, wearing the EP6DT index. Well, diesel 9HD8 1.6 liters and 114 hp – This is the fruit of collaboration with Ford, an eight-valve engine of moderate forcing. The only caveat that should be taken into account when choosing is that the six-speed automatic from Aisin, bearing the French name EAT6, is not available for the diesel version – here only six-speed mechanics are available.
For this money, you can get a car in the Feel version, which will have front and side airbags, heated front seats, a full set of electric windows, electric heated mirrors, air conditioning and a basic audio system. You can pay here for a more powerful engine and automatic transmission, as well as for some options like Parktronic and dual-zone climate control. The older Shine performance costing from 1,257,000 rubles is distinguished by a 7-inch color screen of the multimedia system, diode rear optics and a rear-view camera, and in the top version of Shine Ultimate for 1,416,000 there will be fully diode head optics and full-time navigation. However, diesel in these “packaged” versions is not available: it is offered only in the version of the Feel Edition for 1,174,000 rubles.
It is not surprising to see Lada in the list of cars with a high ground clearance – but not everyone thinks that even the Vesta has a total of 178 mm. In other words, the usual sedan is very well adapted to our roads – simple suspension is playing into his hands, including MacPherson in the front and a semi-dependent rear beam. Having recovered from childhood diseases, they retained excellent energy intensity and obtained the set of qualities that most buyers expect from them – a decent resource, softness and maintainability.
In the list of engines and transmission options, no changes have yet occurred. Motors are still two: a 1.6-liter with an index of 21129, which gives 106 hp, and a newer and more powerful 1.8-liter 21179 to 122 hp, in which the volume increase was achieved by increasing the piston stroke . By the way, Vesta with a 1.8-liter engine is nominally equipped with disc rear brakes. But the robotized gearbox can be combined with any of the two engines, while also trying to save fuel: the stated consumption with it is 0.2-0.3 liters lower than with the mechanics.
Base Vesta, which does not have air conditioning, but retains the ground clearance of interest to us, costs 595 thousand rubles. In addition to the air conditioner, the heated front seats were cut out of it, but the front airbags, power steering, front electric windows and power and heated mirrors remained, as did the full set of security systems. A car with air conditioning costs at least 640 thousand, and with AMT – 665. For the version with the 1.8-liter engine, you will have to pay at least 703 thousand rubles, well, the most expensive performance Exclusive with a salon.
